My Job

As part of my job as an audiologist,I perform otoscopic examinations and hearing evaluation on my patient's hearing every day, I work with people that have difficulties with their hearing. My patient's hearing loss problems range from not hearing the doorbell ring to not being able to hear in background noise.I see patient's anxiety and frustration trying to cope with a hearing problem. Eventually this can lead to a poorer quality of life because of diminished hearing.

What is Pure Tone Audiometry

Pure Tone Audiometry is the key hearing test used to identify hearing threshold levels of an individual, enabling determination of the degree, type and configuration of a hearing loss. Thus, providing the basis for diagnosis and management. PTA is a subjective, behavioural measurement of hearing threshold, as it relies on patient response to pure tone stimuli. Therefore, PTA is used on adults and children old enough to cooperate with the test procedure.

What Do We Hear?.

One of the main benefits of good hearing is we hear meaningful conversation and we can interact with other human beings. Only this morning I listened to my daughter on the way to school, explaining to me what she had written for a school project, how wonderful to be able to hear her speak. We use our ears to listen to our favourite music. One of the greatest pleasures in life is to have a good chat, as well as to listen.

What else can we hear? We hear everyday sounds, the birds singing, the wind blowing, the waves crashing on the coastline, your little baby crying, the crowd roaring for your favorite team, your nearest and dearest saying those three little words, “I love you".

Do You Work In A Noisy Environment?.

If you find yourself in a noisy environment, maybe you work under these conditions, perhaps you will be flying on a plane, or your hearing is exposed to loud sounds now is the time to think about hearing protection

More than likely we take our ability to hear for granted. Not being able to hear properly can have a detrimental effect on one's psyche. But, how does the our hearing work? What happens when hearing loss occurs?.

What Happens When We Hear?

Well, let’s examine the workings and functions of the human ear. The ear parts function in coordination for sensing, collecting and interpreting the sound waves. Each human ear component is responsible for carrying out specific functions. The external ear or the outer ear collects sound waves and channelizes them to the middle ear. In this process, the ear flap first receives the sound waves; transfer them to eardrum (tympanic membrane) via the ear canal (meatus).

The length of the ear canal also contributes in amplifying the sound. In the ear canal, the sweat glands secrete ear wax. If ear wax is produced in excessive amount, then it hampers the hearing ability of the individual. It can also lead to ear infections and at times, hearing loss.

Remember, hearing protection is better than cure.
